Vertical Axis Wind Turbine
Problem Statement:
A number of Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT) configurations will be tested using either Ansys CFX or Ansys Fluent. At least 10 airfoils will be tested using the following configurations:
  • 2,3, and 4 blade configuration
  • Blade mounted at LE, .25C, .5C, .75C, and TE
  • Local blade AoA range of -8 to 8 degrees (.5 degree incr.)
  • Blade arm length from 1xC to 5xC (.5C incr.)

Hey everyone. I have the summer to get this done. I've never done 2-d analysis with cfx or fluent, nor have I had to model/mesh something that rotates. Could someone point me in the direction of a tutorial or two that could help me with this?

Also, is it possible to make the model rotate about a point by simply exposing it to a flow? Or do I have to do something clever.

Sorry for sounding new, it's because I still am :)

no u will have to use frozen flux formulation i believe as there is no stand alone fsi support in fluent.hwevr i have read about people using adina or fluent +abacus for fsi

depending on what you are after, this can actually be done in CFX.
a) Do you know the operating RPM of the blades?
b) In the event that you don't, but actually want the wind to turn the blade, there is a beta feature in CFX which will allow you to do this. However it should be kept in mind that RBD is first order accurate, (but very fast when compared to a frozen rotor or transient solution)
