Default How to analyze a wind impact on a surface

Hi. My name is George, I am an architect, and relatively new to Ansys, to be specific, I do not know anything about it. I got it yesterday.

I want to analyze a wind impact on my two curved surface.
First of all wich ANSYS sofware do I need? ANSYS ICEM CFD or ANSYS CFX?

Is there any kind of tutorial for this?

If you would want to model wind effect on a solid body ( if the deformations are not negligeble) you need to solve a FSI coupling of Ansys multi field and CFX. Else you can model in CFX and import the results on the Structural analysis seperately.

Thank you for the reply Mehdi.

What I did is imported the .dxf file into Ansys CFD 11 and then created a surface out of it. Then created the mesh. Now I need to import it into the CFX right? How can I do that? There is no CFX file to be chosen at the File->Export menu?

Yes exactly, you can save the mesh as a CMDB format file and later import it in CFX or if you are using ANSYS 12 easily darg and drop mesh in cfx.

thank you for the reply one more time. I am using an Ansys version 11.

can you be a little bit more specific about this:

I dont understand you, you created the meshed surface in CFD ???

after importing the mesh in CFX you need to set B.Cs and do the solution, later you can import pressures on the solid model for stress and strain analysis if that is what you are after.

I run the ANSYS ICEM CFD v11, I imported a .dwf file, and then created a surface out of it. Then created the mesh.

The reason why I used ICEM CFD for all this steps is because, I know how to do it in this application. I do not know If this can be done in CFX also, but in any case, if it can be done, than I do not know how to do it.

So now that I did this the mesh, can I import it into the CFX?

Yes this is what I am looking for. Are there any kind of tutorials or at least help files for this? I tried using those from the Ansys application itself, but there are no similar ones to my solution (analysis of wind on a plane, bomber, cooler for processor... Also the results are not calculated as a pressure, but by "density" ? Why is that?).

Hi George,
Just to let you know - you're taking on one of the hardest current topics in CFD here. I wish you luck with it but advise you to be cautious as it is very easy to build a simulation which appears to show one thing when the exact opposite is true...
The current best advice is to be very cautious with the use of CFD in structural engineering, and always to have some back up from wind tunnel or codes of practice.
