hi
I have been using AVL Fire v2010.1. I have done investigation of DI dual fuel engine that fuled with natural gas and diesel inject into cylinder but i dont now how to insert fuels in solver tree.when i define fules into "Multi-Component" in "Initial Condition" segment, together diesel & natural gas insert into cylinder in the first moment whereas i intend to diesel is injected into the compressed air & natural gas mixture. please tell me how to do that?thanks

Hoursfer, I suppose you like to simulate a Diesel ignited gas engine, where as the gas is pre-mixed. If so, specify the gas in the initial conditions and the Diesel in the spray module. Select the right ignition model too.

Actually this is a simplified approach. Doing so will cause the injected Diesel evaporating on the gas species. If teh amount of Diesel being injected is small that approach works fine.

What else parameters should are necessary for this ignition model ? I can not select Diesel Ignited Gas Engine as ignition model, something must be wrong.

Hi yanjl123,

the DIESEL vapors to CH4. That's because FIRE can only handle one fuel at the same time. As avlcfd said, thats the best approch at the moment.

In the "Diesel ignited gas engine" - Ignition model try the setting "automatic" for the fuel mass fraction limit. This gives quite reliable results for a first run.

The problem is although the Diesel Ignited Gas Engine button seems selectable, I can't select it.

Hi yanjl123,

i guess you try to combine the ECFM-3Z with the Diesel ignited gas engine - ignition model.

For a Diesel ignited gas engine simulation use the ECFM.

Hi, i am trying to simulate a dual fuel engine as well but i couldnt seem to get Diesel Ignited Gas Engine to work with ECFM. when i start the simulation a few seconds after it stops. Need Help.

why my FIRE simulation appear this error:%fire-F-cyispra, You specified a fuel that is not supported! can you help me ? i choose the natural gas and diesel and they are both in the fuel database. and i think maybe i set the wrong number of the index scalar ? i set the two both 1.

hi yanjl123,

Have you solved your problem? i am doing the same simulation with yours. i found i can onlu use "Diesel Ignieted Gas Engine Model" with ECFM when using FIRE 2008 not FIRE 2010.

Another question: i defined the CH4 in the initial condition and diesel in the spray. But the simulation results show there is no diesel during the cycle and what injected into the cylinder is just CH4. Is there anyway to solve this problem?

Dear all,

This discussion was organized in 2013, but because there were some things related to my problem which I have been facing now, so I would like to leave some text here hoping to get some help.

I have a question related to changing initial conditions, if you have experience with this, please give me a few minutes to give me some advice. Any help will be helpful to me and I will very much appreciate it.

I am simulating the combustion of a dual-fuel engine using AVL FIRE 2018, in which the gaseous fuel (CH4) will be injected into the intake port to mix with fresh air generating a premixed mixture prior to supply to the cylinder, while diesel fuel (pilot fuel) will be injected into the cylinder as usually in order to ignite the gaseous mixture fuel at the end of the compression process as you know very well.

My simulation will be conducted from IVC to EVO, which does not include intake port and exhaust port simulation. That is, at the start of the simulation, the fluid property inside the engine cylinder must be a mixture of CH4 + fresh air, not only FRESH air as default, therefore I will have to change the species components when setting up the initial conditions.
Specifically, I want to add CH4 to fresh air (O2 + N2) which was contained in the engine cylinder when setting the initial conditions, but I didn't know how to do that. Please give me some advice!

assume you are using Standard Species, the premixed bulk fluid is set via the
Equivalence ratio = 1 / lambda in the initial conditions.

Good morning AVL_FIRE_USER,

Thanks for the message.
I am using the Species transport, Combustion, Emission, and Spray models to simulate the combustion and emission characteristics inside a dual-fuel engine.
In the initial conditions tab, I set Methane as HC fuel with an equivalent ratio of 0.6.
Regarding the combustion model, I use the coherent flame / ECFM model together with the diesel ignited gas engine model as the auto-ignition model.
After finishing the calculation, the results showed that the AFR was very large while the excess air ratio was only 1.6. In particular, the indicated efficiency is more than 1 (why could this happen?).
Is my setting correct or false? Sir? If you have any ideal, please give me some feedback, sir.

Dear All,

I wish to analyze and predict engine performance and emissions on different natural gas engines across the supply chain in a bid to generalize some concepts of interest. I am interested in being able to incorporate these different engines (small, medium, and large) with different engine operating parameters and geometries in a single model. I would like to know if I can perform this task using the AVL Fire. Kindly advise, please.
