I was told Star-CCM+ does not come together with Star-CD in ASIA only. In UK and US, it is bundled with Star-CD. Anyone here knows why that is so?

Dear Azmir,
It probably depends on who you are buying from, CD-adapco (EU + US and / or one of its agents) or from CD-adapco Japan, which in truth has been a separate business since 2004. The licensing of STAR-CCM+ in the EU is as follows: STAR-CCM+ v2.04 (or an earlier version) was licensed in the EU through the STAR-CD license, or as a standalone license. Allowing STAR-CCM+ to use the standard STAR-CD license was a useful way of promoting the use of STAR-CCM+ to existing STAR-CD users. This also effectively sold a lower functionality code with a higher priced license. However, when STAR-CCM+ v2.06 was released it came with a new version of the license manager, which for many users will make STAR-CCM+ more expensive than the higher functionality code STAR-CD, should they choose to switch in the near future. This is because STAR-CCM+ now takes a serial license for every parallel job, whereas STAR-CD does not use serial licenses until all the parallel HPC licenses are used up. The new STAR-CCM+ license is a clone of the Fluent license. Regards Peter |

The impression I get here is: burdening to existing clients. Anyway, can you tell me what Star-CCM+ can do that Star v4 cannot?

Dear Azmir,
The simple answer to what STAR-CCM+ cannot model that STAR-CD v4 can model is most things advanced. Advanced refes to ICE applications, moving mesh, E2P models, etc, the high end applications. STAR-CCM+ will have a few combustion models that STAR-CD. The eulerian multi-phase capability of STAR-CD is missing from STAR-CCM+. There are other examples. This does not imply that STAR-CCM+ is a bad code. STAR-CCM+ already has the basic infrastructure and internal management necessary to work better as a future platform for CFD development than STAR-CD. The difference between the two codes is essentially the range of physics that each code can handle. STAR-CCM+ is expected to match STAR-CD on the modelling side during 2009. STAR-CCM+ can already handle the core basic flows that make up most of the CFD done by many STAR-CD clients today. The front end meshing capabilties of STAR-CCM+, once you understand how the different parameters interact, makes prostar look and feel Jurassic. In this respect, many users with access to STAR-CCM+ via the STAR-CD license should give it a try. My colleagues and I regularly start from native CAD to having a million cell model running in under a day. Regards Peter |
