There aren't that many tutorials from CD-adapco on drawing structures in Stardesign. Where would i be able to find more 'excercises' or examples to practice on?

If you haved installed the stardesign, there some tutorials in stardesign help menu.. try them..

I could only find 2 tutorials which were pretty basic and don't really 'explain' what you are doing in enough detail to really undertake major projects. How have other people coped with this software package? Did they only do these tutorials?

How about going on the training course?

The StarDesign training I received in my course was so-so. We did a couple of exercises but it became very apparent that trying to use it as your sole mode of modeling is a mistake if your model is complex. Do you not have access to another modeling package?

Not really. My time is very limited because it will be a research project for about 2 terms (out of 3) for my master's degree. That said, I wasn't looking at anything too complex, just obtaining residence time distributions from CSTR's and Batch reactors. My main problem is not drawing the reactor (simple cylinder with inlets + outlets), just drawing things 'in' the reactor, such as baffles, obstructions, etc. I find it a bit confusing, hence wanted to practice with more examples. The training course is out of the question because it's too expensive (research group won't fund it for such a short period). I was unsuccessful in finding any non-proprietary tutorials and examples

If you are an academic user, then you should be able to get access to STAR-CCM+, which is a much more powerful code. Generate mesh in STAR-Design, then send the CAD to STAR-CCM+ using a parasolid export/import, and then go to town with your simulations. Contact CD-adapco's help or academic licensing group and they are usually very helpful. This is, of course, only possible if you are an academic user. Otherwise, my understanding is that the cost is comparable to other commercial CFD codes.
