Hello everyone!

I have a very basic question about whether it is possible to couple Star-CD and ABAQUS to simulate fluid-structure-interactions. I have a heard about a third party software tool called MPCCI by Frauenhofer institute. But I also read something about Star-CD v4.08 with which it shall be possible to achieve this "without the need for third party cross-code communication" (as stated on the website of CD-adapco). Has anyone any experience with this? Or is it even possible to use Star-CCM+ and ABAQUS without MPCCI?

Thanks a lot for your replies!

Hi , I don't know if you already heard about Oofelie Multiphysics.
This code has been coupled with many other third parties sw.
Typically they have a FSI solution in combination with Numeca.
By the way , I also heard some interactions between Oofelie and Fluent.
Maybe you could find information on the Web regarding this.

According to the Star-CD (v4.10) documentation "loosely coupling" between Star-CD and ABAQUS is possible. For me that seems to be a one-way coupling as flow data is mapped onto a surface in ABAQUS. To achieve a fully coupled, transient simulation, MPCCI seems to be the proper way to proceed.
Does anyone has any experience in using MPCCI coupling for STAR-CD and ABAQUS? Is it a straight forward procedure or a rather tricky way to get (unreliable) results?
I depend on using STAR-CD and ABAQUS as other software products are not available for me.

Hello everyone,
Please go through the link http://www.adina.com/index.shtml, you will come to know about FSI capability of ADINA.No need to couple any 2 code to solve FSI .
Use single code..............

Hello,

it sounds that MpCCI is the best solution to solve your problem. You can contact the MpCCI Team (which I am part of) for a free test license at www.mpcci.de, we will surely be able to help you.

Thank you so much for your reply! I will give it a shot. Hopefully over the next weeks I can give some feedback on how I could cope with the program.

Some interesting news about FSI....
Open Engineering and Numeca are now launching STRONG coupling for FSI
it gives huge amounts of advantages for this type of simulation
the integrated procedure is quiet lighter than using MPCCI
why should we get complications and dangerous error sources when simplicity is at your disposal?

Hi all,
i am working on 2 way coupled Fluid structure analysis of a twin tube shock absorber using ANSYS12.0 (Mechanical and CFX), and now getting error like......Fatal error in requesting total mesh displacement from structural part. Is any one know the reason behind this, ur answer will be very much helpful for me.....

Hi, I'm quiet not estonnished by your request , the main problem in these couplings staying the mesh displacement and interfaces between structure and fluid. this is one of the problems you get when bad descripting criteria with MPCCI also. That's why such integrated solutions as Fine Hexa/Oofelie were set to prevent this kind of erros sources. I cannot Help you in your case because we're not using weak coupling for FSI.

Hi,
In the new version, Star-CD 412 and Star-CCM+ 502, you can search the key words and find more materials about the FSI.

Hello everyone!

Sorry, it took me so long to post an update. I ended up not using MpCCI but utilizing the FSI capabilities introduced in STAR-CCM+ v4.08. In contrast to MpCCI only linear elastic materials can be used. With the help of the manual I was able to set up a 2D FSI simulation that was sufficient for my needs.

Best regards

Hi, You can also check out Fluidyn Multiphysics - www.fluidyn.com
Unlike other tools which have external coupling, Fluidyn has internal coupling capability and there many coupling methods available as well. If you could share your email address then i will be glad to share some technical publications on fluidyn-MP FSI for aeroelasticity problems.

Here is a presntation on co-simulation with STAR-CCM+ and Abaqus. The coupling is part of STAR-CCM+

Sorry, i'm new with FSI between Star and Abaqus...i'm trying to realize a mechanical coupling for a re-entry capsule with an unconventional heat shield. This shield is like an umbrella and it is very flexible. So i would like to see texture deformations into a supersonic flow. I have also to scale my model to see what happens in different configurations. My problem is that when i scale my FEM model and CFD model star don't pass pressures to abaqus and the texture remains in the undeformed position.
So my question is: is it necessary that texture positions in FEM model and in CFD model are the same? obviously nodes positions could never be the same, but if i have different scale and different spatial position of the texture, it could work,or not?
Please help me

PS:i hope i was clear

Dear All,

I am seeking an individual to run FSI analysis for me with Abaqus and StarCCM+. I am currently handling a project for my company and have not had time to run these simulations myself and I actually don't have access to the software at my current location.

I will provide all the raw data you will need to run it, all I require is the report. This is more of an academic work, not industry based. I will pay for such service. You can contact me for further discussion if you are interested.

Cheers
