UDF to insert boundary for small pipes in large computation domain

Hi everybody,

In my case, I need to simulate the ventilation flow in a large compartment say 10m*10m, and in the compartment there are lots of small (from 5cm-20cm) pipes. Those pipes are small but like many sets of cobwebs. and also they are of high temperature and the heat transfer should also be considered in this ventilation study.

Currently we build the model of those pipes and mesh them, which result in low-quality grid and huge mesh number(~50 millions).

I heard before that there is some kind of method, in which we don't have to build and mesh the actual pipe in our domain, in stead we can add those as source items or implicitly set them as boundary conditions. maybe Immersed Solid Method?

Anyone could help on this? CFX and Fluent is available.

thanks,
garrison

If you do not care about the detailed flow around the hot pipes but want to include their heating effect the thermal source approach would make sense. This is supported in CFX and Fluent so take you choice of solvers.

Not immersed solids. Just a straight forward thermal source term, with a momentum source term to handle the drag of the flow over the pipes.
