Hi
every body can help me?
My model's mesh made within ICEM and then its physical set within CFX.
When I'm changing the number of nodes within ICEM then I'm faced with this error:
-------------------------------------------------------------------+
ERROR #002100013 has occurred in subroutine Chk_Splane.
Message:
The symmetry boundary condition requires that the boundary patch
mesh faces form a plane or axis. However, face set 4 in the
symmetry boundary patch

symf

is not in a strict plane, which means that at least one of its
faces is not parallel to the others. To make the solver run
you can do one of the following:

(1) Make sure that this symmetry boundary patch is in a plane or
axis by checking and regenerating the mesh.
(2) If the symmetry boundary patch is an axis rather than a
plane, change the tolerance of the degeneracy check by
increasing the value of the Solver Expert Parameter
'degeneracy check tolerance' (the default value is 1.e-4).
(3) Increase the value of the Solver Expert Parameter
'vector parallel tolerance' (the default value is 1 deg.).
Note that the accuracy of the symmetry condition may decrease
as the tolerance is increased. This is because the tolerance
is the number of degrees that a mesh face normal is allowed
to deviate from the average normal for the entire face set.
+--------------------------------------------------------------------+

+--------------------------------------------------------------------+
An error has occurred in cfx5solve:

The ANSYS CFX solver exited with return code 1. No results file
has been created.
+---------------------
please help me.

Opaque will become famous soon enough
Open the definition file in CFD-Post, create a vector plot and plot the Normal variable on such mesh region/symmetry plane.

If the mesh is not planar, you have selected a mesh region for which a SYMMETRY boundary condition cannot be used. If the mesh is slightly non-planar, it is up to you to decide if you want to use the expert parameter to bypass the error message, and continue aware that something else may come out wrong later. Finally, the last recourse is to go back to the meshing program and find a way to create a true planar surface.

Hope the above helps,

This error created because I wanted to change my icem mesh size and I wanted to check independence in the mesh size.

While the initial mesh resolved without error.

grateful but,

I don't know, how I can create a vector plot and plot the Normal variable on such mesh region inside definition.

You can also do this in ICEM. Make the symmetry boundary the only thing visible and have a close look at it. You should see some elements which are off the intended plane. And the advantage of doing it in ICEM is that you can then fix the problem elements and eliminate the problem.

The error message tells you exactly what the problem is. If you put an integer in for the maximum number of iterations it will work. Isn't that obvious?

Hello fahimeh456

Did you solve your symmetry problem?
Now, I have the same problem: CFX can run 6 million nodes (first lawyer setting: 0.1) successfully, while when I increased the nodes up to 10 million nodes in ICEM (also I changed the first lawyer setting: 0.01), It failed to solve and symmetry error occurred. By the way, the 2*2*2 quality is 0.9 and angle is more than 36 for 10 million.

I tried to convert to the unstructured mesh by selecting "no projection" in ICEM. CFX ran a few step and stopped with error "overflow".

I didn't change the expert parameters suggested by CFX help. Because I believe it will result in a bad result.

My model is the Twisted-11 foil.

Many thanks!

The non-planar symmetry plane error is a very simple one. Your symmetry plane is not planar. So load your mesh in ICEM and look carefully at the symmetry plane and find what is not planar. ICEM sometimes mis-classifies element faces resulting in this error, so you manual correct the part the elements are in and the error is fixed.

hello,my friend
My problem solved when I raised the value of vector parallel tolerance in CFX's solver settings.
Because when the mesh is finer then elements angles change.
so the elements on the screen or edges are not connected.

Okay, I see.
Thanks a lot

Yeah, I see. Another questions: Will increasing the tolerance lead to a bad result? So, any suggestions for setting the value of vector parallel tolerance?

I'm not sure,But when I tried it then I got a good answer. You can test different tolerance and select
the least amount of tolerance.

Hello, my friend

Follow your suggestions, I increased tolerance up to 5 and the result seemed good.

Many thanks!

Increasing tolerance seems to be a good method, the calculation run successfully.

Many thanks.
