Running CFX on a cluster

Hi,

Has someone managed to get CFX 5.5.1 running on a cluster on a license which is NOT connected to the master node but is running on an other machine on the network. Is this possible anyway? Regards, Jaap

What do you mean? Which environwment? Distributed parallel on PC1 (Master), PC2 (Slave) PC3 (Slave), and the license manager on PC4?

Exactly. And this PC4 is not contained in the cluster but is somewhere else in the network. Best regards, Jvk

Beste Jaap,

Maybe this sounds a little stupid, but what is the exact definition of a cluster. Which environment do you use? Unix, Linux, Irix, Windows....

Please describe the error/message you get.

Here we have several Win-PC's single CPU, several Win-PC's dual CPU and a dual linux PC. All connected in a 100bt-network . The license manager runs on the oldest and slowest PC. We can run in parallel over all Win PC's. Any Win-PC can be a master. We haven't been albe to distribute a run over linux and Windows. Does anyone have experience with that?

Re: Running CFX on a cluster

Beste Astrid,

We are running a cluster under Linux. The cluster consists of 1 master node, which is connected to the network, and 5 nodes which are 'behind' the master node. Each node is a dual AMD PC. We have problems with adding the nodes to the PVM-environment when running a distributed job. We wanted to make sure that this is not due to the fact that the license is not running on the master node, but somewhere else in the network. I would say that this should work, i.e. only the master node is able the check the license, the other nodes cannot check it because they cannot 'see' the network (they are behind the master). Best regards, Jaap

Beste Jaap,

I can't figure out what the problem is. Perhaps the info in the following thread might help:

We do this all the time. We have a linux cluster and the license server runs on a central HP box (not connected to the cluster) on the network. You only need to make sure that your cluster can see the CFX-5 installation and the license file so that the FlexLM stuff knows where to look for a license.

Hi Jaap,

Have you followed the instructions in the help documents correctly? For example, have you correctly set up the PVMhosts and hosts.ccl files?

Re: Running CFX on a cluster

Yes, we have no idea why it doesn't work anymore. It worked with the 'license-network-card' in the cluster-master. We've put this network-card into another PC on the network, and we were only able to run a job on the master, not distributed. However, when we put back the network-card into the master, still no distributed job can be run anymore... We've got no idea what has changed, probably something in the Linux-config, because reinstalling CFX didn't solve our problem. All the files you listed are correct. The only thing that seems strange to us, is that when starting pvmd from the command-line openen from the CFX-startmenu, we cannot add the different nodes to the pvm environment, due to "The value of the $PVM_ROOT environment variable on node1 is invalid (""). Use the absolute path to the pvm3/ directory.". This doesn't seem normal, does it?

Check the path to PVM on each host in your PVMhosts file again.
