Hello there,

I have got 2 questions..

1) Whats the easiest way to make a coil geometry?

2) If I have to model 2 fluid flows, one is inside the coil and ther other one is outside the coil to calculate the heat transfer...(they are not mixing) can I do that at the same time?

I have access to icem, ansys, CFX 5.6

Hi American,

On the CFX-Community web page there are some CAD2Mesh tutorials, one of which is drawing a heater coil. You can find it under documentation on the CFX5 page. Sounds pretty close to what you are doing.

In 5.6 the fluid inside and outside the coil has to be the same, otherwise you have to run a multi-component simulation. In 5.7 you will be able to have different fluids in different non-mixing domains and still run a simple fluid. Still a few months to wait for 5.7 to be released.

Hi Glenn

I have gone through those that tutorial again. I guess, it doesn't teach you how to develop a coil from the scratch?? !!

It is asking to import from a saved directory...

My question was meant to ask: how can I make the coil from the scratch...

Please do clarify..

Hi American,

Sorry, I didn't mention it, but you need to do a bit of digging to find the DesignModeller tutorials. They are at the following URL:

http://www.ansys.com/dm_how_tos/cm_tutorials_book.html

Keep in mind that these examples are for DesignModeller 2.1 which hasn't been released yet! These have replaced the old tutorials for DM 1.0. It looks like ANSYS has got the tutorials for the next version of DM out there before the software. Anyway, you should be able to do all the geometry creation bits in DM 1.0, you will just need to export it to ICEM CFD 4.CFX to mesh it.

Regards, Glenn
