STL File - Mesh Surface Problems

Hi people!

Would like to know if anyone has encountered problems working with STL type files? They can be read by CFX and ICEM, however, it seems that the surfaces aren't recognised. This is a major problem, 'cos then meshing is not possible. Does anyone have any recommendations or does anyone know of a converter or something like that? Please help, as I'm completely lost. Cheers!

Harmeet.

Hi Harmeet,

Last time I imported an STL body all surfaces came in as the same part, and you had to sort them out to get your boundary conditions on the surfaces. Is that what you mean?

Hi Glenn,

Thanks for the message. I'm actually a Gambit user, but it seems that it won't work with STL files and such. I guess I need to use ICEM and CFX.

I have the STL files already generated. How should I proceed? To be honest, I haven't used CFX before, but I'm definitely willing to try. I just hope that ICEM will be able to recognise the imported STL file with its surfaces. It definitely didn't work with Gambit.

Glenn, how would you suggest I proceed? Please advise. Thanks a million! Cheers!

Harmeet.

Hi Harmeet,

I'm not sure about this, but I don't think the STL format supports multiple surface groups - so no preprocessor will automatically recognise your surface groups. ICEM (and Gridgen) does have some useful tools to help split your enclosing surface up into its component patches.
