Hi,does anyone here know something about parallel computation of CFX? Our lab want to by high performance computation system for CFX, and nobody in the lab has the idea about it. So I want some advice from you!We use WINDOWS system usually. Thanks!

Hi,

If you want to know how to allow CFX to run in parallel, read the documentation: CFX-5 Installation, Installing CFX-5 on Windows, Parallel Setup. It's quite straightforward.

Regards,

Rui

First of all you need a parallel-licence.

Then you have to setup the name of the windows cpus in the /CFXDIRECTORY/config/5.6/hosts.ccl e.g. for 3 machines (in my case I have a cluster with windows name blade01 / 02 / 03 ...):

EXECUTION CONTROL: PARALLEL HOST LIBRARY: # no remote shell access to enepc155 HOST DEFINITION: blade01

Installation Root = /prod/CFX5.6

Relative Speed = 1. END # HOST DEFINITION blade01 HOST DEFINITION: blade02

Installation Root = /prod/CFX5.6

Relative Speed = 1. END # HOST DEFINITION blade02 HOST DEFINITION: blade03

Installation Root = /prod/CFX5.6

Relative Speed = 1. END # HOST DEFINITION blade03 END # PARALLEL HOST LIBRARY END # EXECUTION CONTROL

Then you can call in the solver the name of the cpus you want to parallelize. No problems.

I run CFX on PC, and it is limited by the hardware. The lab will buy a set of high performance computation system for CFD simulation.I just want to know whether there are some limits caused by computer system, Which kind of processor does work? Is 64 also ok? Does WINDOWS operation system work well on servers?¡¡£Éhave no idea on parallel computation of CFD, and I am now confused.

Well, if you buy a 64 bit processor (e.g. AMD opteron) you will need a 64 bit software. If you install a 32 bit software on a 64 bit processor, it will go at 32 bit...

My lab has a 4 processors windows cluster and a 14 processors unix cluster (32 bit both). If you are not a dummy with linux you can choose a unix cluster, but the setup is really complicated...you need a net administrator that works togheter with you. If you want a simple solution, but not really the best, choose windows o.s. This is my opinion....not an universal law!!
