2D or 3D

Hello, everyone
I am thinking of modelling a gas-liquid reactor using 2D model instead of 3D model. The reactor is in rectangular shape. The geometry is symetric. Can someone suggest that, in what cases I can use 2d mdoel and in what cases I can't use it? I am also interested to know if the 2D results are comparable with 3D ones. Thanks in advance! Phil |

Hello Phil,
If you are modeling a gas-liquid reactor, surely you get more realistic results when you use 3D model, because although your reactor is in rectangular shape and the geometry is symetric, still the flow inside this volume is not symetric. In a 2D model you actually miss the effects of volumetric surroundings of the cross section which you are choosing, of course if your flow field is more like a plug flow field, then these effects are less. however, in cases like heat transfer in a peace of metal (in which particles are not moving) a 2D model can also be used... best regards, houman |
