Hi,

I am coming from the hexahedral mesh world, and am new to using tetras. This might be a stupid question, but I will ask anyway!

When I used hexas, I would often limit the number of mesh points I required by changing the aspect ratio of the elements. For example, if one is modelling a 2 inch diameter pipe that is 5 feet in length, the mesh spacing on the circular cross section should be much finer than the mesh spacing on along the axis of the pipe. How do I control the aspect ratio of tetras? Is this even possible?

Any advice would be appreciated!

Newbie!!

Hi,

That is the biggest drawback with tets - they don't work too well with aspect ratios to far from 1. You can define tet aspect ratios in CFX-Mesh but it is not recommended to go beyond 2, and even that gives some wonky results sometimes.

Long thin geometries will always be better meshed with prisms or hexes so you can stretch the aspect ratioes out and keep a reasonable mesh quality.
