2D airfoil tutorial and recomendations

Hello. Anybody has tutorials or any recomendations (mesh, preprocesing, postprocesing, convergence) to make an analysis of a 2D and 3D airfoils, of a NACA4415, in a RE from 200.000 to 700.000 ? We are working in Ansys CFX 5.7.1 Thanks in advanced. Santiago.

Hi,

In the lower end of your range the transition point may be significant. To model transition you will need the transition model - I am not sure if it is fully implemented in 5.7.1 but it is in version 10. Don't forget to match the experimental upstream turbulence levels and wing surface quality.

The SST turbulence model is a good one to start off with (and the transition model is an extension of the SST model).

If you want lift/drag points in the stalled region it is likely you will need DES or LES.

For meshing try to use a hex mesh in the boundary layer if possible, but a tet/prism mesh with inflation well beyond the boundary layer should be OK.
