Paralisation in Windows XP

Hello,
My university has win licenses for cfx and we need to work in windows. Now i wanna know when I use paralelisation in windowas what i gat in speed becouse we run normal LAN 100mb network. Is this too slow or we can try to work with that. Problem is that my simulation run on local machine for 2-4 days depending on variables and we run 300000 elements mesh. The proble is that i need 3-4 mil elem for my simulation. What to do? Zoran Karabaic |

I doubt 100 mb is going to cut it. I would suggest 1 gbps is a minimum requirement.

Hi,
Sorry Joe, but I think you are wrong. My testing of 100mb versus gigabit ethernet has shown there is very little difference. I have run 100MB ethernet for years with good parallel speedup. I am now running everything on Gigabit ethernet but it sped things up by only about 1-2%, not really significant. In my experience with CFX there is little point getting anything more than basic 100MB or gigabit ethernet as the speedup from the network side of things is small. I have tested up to 8 node parallel. I suspect when you start talking about 16 nodes or more the network becomes more important and you need to look at more specialised networks, but for small clusters (8 nodes or smaller) 100MB ethernet will work fine. Zoran, don't worry, your 100MB network will work fine. What will be more important is the reliability of the network. Network outages will kill your jobs and this becomes very annoying. I stand corrected then. Never worked on clusters with less than gigabit links.

I'll try paralelisation next monday cause i need to make some preparations first, and learn how to do that. My network is wery goog and is working great, newer shout down. Do you have some tips on what to do or some parts what to look up ? Zoran |

One thing to consider is to use a private or local network. You probably don't want to share traffic with other things, like email, data transferring, etc.

Oh, network is local, and is blocked to all outside trafic. So next weak i'll gona try it.
