CFX and 2D projects

Hello,
i tryed to check some 3d domains and compare them with 2d but i can't load 2d mesh in CFX. Before i used fluent for that but now wanna try with cfx. So the problem is that i can't load 2d mesh in cfx, is there some option for 2d or it can't process 2d ? Thanke you Zoran |

CFX is 3D only. If you want to make 2D calculations with CFX, you have to extrude one layer height in the 3rd dimension. Have a look at the tutorials.

Hi Zoran,
As Dr. Flow Squad said, CFX always solves in 3D. To make 2D calculations, create a "2D" mesh having only one layer thick. You will then impose a periodic boundary condition on these the two faces. However, I am also new to this and I have a question too ! I've read the following thread : http://www.cfd-online.com/Forum/cfx_...cgi?read=19151 and I still don't understand how to name the faces in ICEM to have them in CFX. Here is what I do: 1 - I create the 2D surface in ICEM 2 - I name the edges (Inlet, Outlet, etc..) 3 - I create a 2D block, associate it to geom, mesh it. 4 - The pre-mesh is OK in 2D 5 - I create 3D block by extruding it from 2D 6 - The 3D pre-mesh is OK too 7 - I convert the pre-mesh to unstructured mesh and export it in .cfx5 When I load that mesh in CFX-Pre, there is only one 2D region (named Curves in my case) so I cannot directly impose my boundary conditions without first editind the mesh in Pre. I am sure there is a better (and faster!) way to do it. Anyone knows how I can bypass that last step ? Any help will be appreciated ! Thanks, Felix |

The following post describes how to assign the names to the faces but it doesn't seem to work in my case.

In general don't use periodic boundaries for the two faces in a 2D simulation. If the intention is for there to be no flow through those faces, then use a symmetry boundary.
