Default ICEM: unstruct tet grid with periodicity?

hey all,

i'm trying to mesh a singe passage of a compressor stage. Since the geometry is quite complex I was hoping to create it by using the "automatic" tetra volume mesher. But sadly the periodic surfaces aren't periodic most of the time, using higher resolutions (node count is not the same). I know how to assign periodicity when using blocking first, but this is very time consuming and I'm trying to simplyfy the process as much as possible...

I urgently need help! If you know any tricks, please let me know!!!

Try Turbo-grid, its cool with Turbomachines.

Markus,

You do not need to define geometry periodity first as Hexa. I just finished a one-passage Tetra mesh. What you need to do to obtain periodicity is to create related (periodic) geometries first, and then define periodity in the global mesh parameter panel. ICEM will do the periodic job for you.

After Tetra mesh generated, you can not adjust nodes on the periodic surfaces, or periodity will be destroyed.

You can do a simple model first to try this feature.

Wish it helpful to you.

Firstly, thanks Rikio for your reply,

My periodic surfaces are copies of each other. I basically created one surface first then copied and rotated it to the desired pitch angle. The surface grid is very similar but not exactly the same (surface one 2208 nodes, surface two 2212 nodes), so somehow the periodicty is slightly off.

Well, where the unmatched nodes reside? Are you sure you have the same geometries on the periodic surfaces, including curves and points?

did you define periodicity in the global mesh parameters??

if yes, then

first mesh without defining it and again do meshing on the same file with defining it, i think it is some kind of bug but this way it worked for me.
