Hello,

is it possible to use the *.def file to change some preprocessing data and run a new simulation or one needs the *.cfx file. Thanks

There are a few different ways to modify a .def file.

1. In Solver Manager > Tools > Edit Definition File
2. Open the .def file in PRE
3. Create a ccl file and run from command line: cfx5solve -def deffile.def -ccl cclfile.ccl

and also you can do like this:
cfx5cmds -read -def ***.def -text aa.ccl
then you can edit the aa.ccl
use the command:
cfx5cmds -write -def ***.def -text aa.ccl
to change the def file.

Yes, the *.def file is enough.

I think (but not sure) that, in a simple way of putting it, the *.def file = *.cfx file + mesh

nah its more like *.cfx file = mesh + all ccl ; *.def file = mesh + ccl required for the run.

mate, that simulation is taking its time to converge

You are right, the *.cfx file also contains the mesh information.
The documentation (ANSYS CFX-Pre File Types) says: "The case file (*.cfx) contains the physics data, region and mesh information for the simulation...". I've checked, and it's true

About the *.def file, it says "*.def file contains the specification for the whole simulation, including the geometry, surface mesh, boundary conditions, fluid properties, solver parameters and any initial values."
Surface mesh????!!!!
And the *.cfx file also contains solver parameters information, etc

But, answering Anna question: "You can load a definition file back into ANSYS CFX-Pre to recreate a simulation"
