FSI-restart and several .rst files
 

Hi,
I've done a couple of restarts on my FSI-simulation and noticed that in every _001, _002, _003, etc... folder there's a huge .rst file (on the order of 50 GB). Can I delete the .rst file in all but the current running folder without losing my transient results?

Yes. The rst file contains the structural results. Each restart copies the old structural results and then appends to them, so you can remove the old ones. You might also want to reduce the frequency at which results are written to cut down on the data (see MFOU).

I've got a new question:
Can I use an old .rst file and only use it as initial condition to make a new (smaller) .rst file, i.e. restart the simulation but with a new results file?

I wanna do this because I only need the last few time steps in the (huge/enormous) results file...

No, rst files are only for post-processing, they are not really used for restarts. But you can load the rst file into Prep7 then use some commands to delete the results data that is not needed. I haven't done this for a long time, so test this out on a small case first. The following would delete results sets 1 through 20...

8 GB took 45 minutes to delete, so my >100 Gb file will take some time... :)
