Hi we are running CFX on a 64 bit 12 core 24 GB windows system. However we cannot calculate on all cores. Ansys support was not helping at all, a bunch of I**** if u ask me. However it seems that I am a little bit spoilt from CD Adapco (just nice people on the support line, and a stable prog.). Well however after talking to 5 different ansys wanna know guys I want to ask u people.
Ansys CFX 64 bit is installed and all the licences are installed. I did read the manual and startet the hpmpi service from command line with
cfx5parallel -start-hpmpi-service.

However If I want to start a parallel run with hpmpi local on our system it does all the partitioning but stops after starting the solver

+--------------------------------------------------------------------+

Solver

+--------------------------------------------------------------------+

it doesn't exit the run it just doesn't do anything.

So my question where can i find a step by step guide to get this s**** running on win7 64bit??

Please help and forgive my unpleasand english but I am very frustrating. U have all this calculation power and can't use it.

THX

I have no idea what the problem is. The parallel setup guide in the documentation has always worked fine for me. As this is a key feature in CFX which is not working for you I would increase the pressure on your CFX support people - start talking about returning software and money back and that should get their attention.

This looks like a CPU compatibility issue,

1-I assume you talked with ansys and there is no patch required for your type of CPU, sometimes this is the case for server CPUs or new ones.

2- if the above solution wasn't available, the only other option which I can suggest you is to try MPICH2 rather than HPMPI.

First of all thank's for replies
I have tried local parallel MPICH2 but there was an errro.
Right now i can't remember what exactly it was but i guess error number 255.
the only way that i can do the analysis is by serial run mode.
I myself guess that maybe i should install some special software.
If anybody has any suggestion pls let me to know.
looking forward for any reply.

As I said, the installation instructions for parallel have always worked for me. If they do not work for you then something is probably wrong with your setup.

Have you tried all the parallel options (MPICH, HPI, Intel, PVM etc)? For instance PVM is the easiest to get working, that one might work.

Long shot here but:
This would happen to me before when i did not have an internet connection on my laptop (out of range of network) serial would work fine but parallel would not. it would say "preparing run" but just sit there forever. Do you have a network connection?

Thank u for your reply
I do have internet connection but i have never connected to the internet because I afraid that worms and viruses attack the computer.

Same problem here on PC , same installation on lap-top works fine . this has to do something with Ethernet or Wireless adapters . because it sometimes disconnects my modem , and with some random changes I ran on 4 CPUs . anyone with a accurate knowledge about networks is needed I guess .

I had a word with ANSYS and the problem is that no IP address can be found and HP MPI needs this.
In case of workgroup settings, it works also if PC is connect to an Ethernet Switch cable.
Hence, you would not need necessarily the Internet access.

This would also fix the meshing issue in WB. In fact, attaching geometry occurs if the mesh was created when the machine is on network (or connected to the switch) and then subsequently taken off. To avoid this happening you can set the environment variable ANS_OLD_ATTACH = 1.

Good luck.

Contributing to Sal's answer, I'd like to suggest change dynamic IP to Static IP which guarantee an IP for the computer even without an internet connection. As a suggestion, set 127.0.0.1.

Ribeiro

oj.bulmer will become famous soon enough
Hello Ribeiro,

When I try to set the address as 127.0.0.1, I receive a a message saying its reserved for loopback addresses. Is there a way around this?

Thanks

hi

got projects that run fine in parallel-mode and some who don't (without starting the solver in serial mode first)

 • in one case there was an error message with small catalogue size ( ->http://www.cfd-online.com/Forums/cfx...ogue-size.html ). i normally allocate much more memory than needed(since its availiable and could reduce HDD-load or speed things up) but in that case i had to manually increase the allocation factor for the catalogue size(detailed memory overrides)
 • in another project i had to start the solver serial-mode, interrupt(pause) the solver and could then continue parallel(in my case up to 8 partitions/cores without any probs). when i tried to start the simulation with 8 partitions from the start the solving just stops like chili023 describes
hope i could help
some ideas how to fix these problems would be nice(its really anoying if you have to simulate lots of different parameter variations and have to copy the project to "run them parallel"^^ )
