Simulating the AIAA 4th Drag Prediction Workshop testcases

Hi,

I'm going to conduct simulations of the Common Research Model which is a popular validation case of external aerodynamics of a generic transonic aircraft.

The geometries, test cases, results are given at http://aaac.larc.nasa.gov/tsab/cfdlarc/aiaa-dpw/, which is linked from the cfdonline validation page.

I'll be using ICEM CFD for the hybrid meshes as I don't have the multiblock structured mesh capability in the software. I've read the meshing guidelines at the website and can see that others who use hybrid meshes have reduced the edge and face element sizings in order to meet the total mesh element quantities, unlike those who make mutliblock structured meshes which achieve the total element quanities with the stated sizings. Would it be more appropriate to aim for the guidelines total element quantities rather than the giving edge and face sizings? The range of meshes considered would cover a mesh independence assessment.

I am planning on using the SST and if time permits the Spalart-Allmaras turbulence models. And also trying a few different timescales for this steady state set up.

Has anyone else attempted these simulations and could give any useful tips, particularly with repsect to the meshes?

Thanks.

Never tried them. But all I can suggest is to try it and see how you go. As there should be well validated results for these cases you will know when you are close.
