I have read that the k-epsilon turbulence model is unsuitable for flow over a curved surface. Does this mean I shouldn't use it for flow through a pipe bend?

It depends.

How accurate do you want your results? How significant is the bend in the scheme of things anyway? What are you trying to get out of the model?
