Can heat coupling between fluid and solid be achieved in Converge? Our aim is to investigate the temperature field and thermal stress of the moving piston in ICE.

Hello Jietuo,

Investigation of temperature fields within solid objects can be achieved through Conjugate Heat Transfer modelling. CHT model in CONVERGE is used to solve for heat transfer in solid regions. Please have a look at our manual (Chapter 16) for more information on this and how to go about setting up a CHT model. You can also have a look at some of our CHT example cases.

CONVERGE does not have an FEA solver for investigation of thermal stresses. However, using transfer.out, information on near-wall heat transfer coefficients and wall temperatures can be fed as boundary conditions for a thermal stress analysis with an FEA code. The transfer.out file, which contains wall heat transfer data for each cell adjacent to a wall boundary, to couple with FEA, can be written out by enabling Output/Post Processing > Output generation > Heat transfer output in STUDIO or setting transfer_flag=1 in inputs.in.

We offer a Heat transfer mapping utility (htc_map/heat transfer coefficient map) to cycle-average near-wall data from a CONVERGE CFD simulation and map the result to
another surface for such purposes. This can be downloaded from our website.

Hope this helps,

Sincerely,

Srivastava

Thank you for your reply.

I have checked the CHT example case in which the interface of the tube is fixed. But in our cases, the interface between solid and fluid is moving instantaneously. In such condition, can the temperature field of the moving piston be obtained?

Best Regards.

Hello Jietuo,

It will work with moving interfaces as well. If you would like a sample case setup for reference, please contact support@convergecfd.com so we can provide you with one.

Sincerely,

Srivastava
