Hi all,

Probably the dumbest question out but bare with me.

I'm trying to install engrid for windows and I've got no idea what I'm doing. I don't know what this is about building engrid? I can't find anything to download and install.

I think this is the right place:

https://www.engits.com/engrid---mesher.html

Which directs me to here:

https://github.com/enGits/engrid/wik...ing-on-Windows

I've installed the https://gitforwindows.org/

But I can't even find where to run the first command line prompt from.

So I'm in dire straits and need of help

Much appreciated.

Brett

Quick answer: My apologies, but I haven't been able to look into building enGrid on Windows since 2013 or 2014, which was when those wiki pages about building enGrid on Windows were last updated.

The latest build instructions are provided on the main README file: https://github.com/enGits/engrid/ - and are referring only as a quick build guide for building it on Ubuntu.
Technically, you should be able to do something similar on Windows, but it would require Microsoft Visual Studio, then building from source code VTK and possibly Qt, if Qt is not already available as a pre-built package for the Visual Studio version that you are using.

My best suggestion is that if you are using Windows 10, then install the WSL feature and install "Ubuntu Bash" on it. Then follow the instructions that were written for building enGrid on Ubuntu.

If you are using some form or port of OpenFOAM on Windows, then you can try installing one of the versions that provide detailed installation instructions, such as this one: https://openfoam.org/download/windows-10/ - by the end, you should have Xming installed and able to use desktop applications from within "Ubuntu Bash", such as ParaView.

edit: Another alternative is to install one of the last installers that we did for installing enGrid on Windows... the wiki should still have links to them.

Thanks for that.

Do you have a link to one of the last installers?

Is the process complicated? the whole build procedure and installing all kinds of files and programs from all over the place is confusing me a bit.

Installers of enGrid 1.4 for Windows: https://github.com/enGits/engrid/wik...od_for_Windows

Old development builds after that release: https://sourceforge.net/projects/blu...nGrid-1.5-dev/

Last edited by wyldckat; April 8, 2019 at 20:43. Reason: added link to older dev builds

Thanks Wyldecat.

I've installed that file and run the process. It doesn't seem to work and goes to visual studio for debugging. I let it run overnight but nothing seems to complete. If I close visual studio then the engrid window disappears.

I suppose there is no one single file or thing you have to do to make it work? im not up to speed with building code and programs.

If you tried the 1.5-dev version, that is somewhat natural that happens, given that it was an experimental development build...

enGrid seems to be available for Fedora directly on its package management: https://apps.fedoraproject.org/packages/engrid - so if you could install Fedora 30 or 29 on a Virtual Machine or via WSL on Windows 10, it would be the quickest/simplest alternative to use it there...

Beyond this, there was a recent issue opened at the issue tracker: https://github.com/enGits/engrid/issues/65 - and it's not entirely straight forward to build it on Linux either... mostly because we have to build the right VTK version along with Qt4...

If you really want this to work on Windows, you might want to consider if you could sponsor the efforts to get it up and running on Windows...
