Solidworks competes with Siemens NX and Floefd (the engine of SWFS) belongs to Siemens now.
This make me wander what will happen with SWFS in say 2-3 years time. |

Sorry for my ignorance. Could you clarify why you think something special will happen? Since FloEFD has already integrated into Siemens product quite well, I personally cannot see how things will change a lot in short time

One scenario would be Siemens saying "Floefd is ours now and we don't want it to be integrated in Solidworks anymore".
Solidworks bought Xflow some time ago and may say, "no problem, we'll integrate Xflow then" The things are not so simple of course, there are, most probably, long term contractual obligations between SW and Flowefd, but if Siemens doesn't want Floefd integrated in SW this will happen sooner or later. |

The longer you think about such possibilities the more new possibilities arise.
There are endless scenarios that can happen. Maybe XFlow will lever get integrated into SW as it might be seen as a more high-end simulation for Catia and not SW. Who knows. If you decide to drop SWFS and rather go with XFlow because here you can be sure that this is Dassault and will stay Dassault, then you have a lot of effort in migrating data and learning a new system, which may be in its capability does not suit your application as well as SWFS, and at the end it might turn out SWFS will stay forever. So what are you trying to do? Predict if you have an accident tomorrow? You could decide not to leave the house and still, an airplane might crash into your house or a cable fire burns down the house. Or how the weather is in 4 weeks? It will either rain or not. Any such speculations and overexaggerating of such uncertainties are just to get you to switch from your current product to a competitor product although you can still switch in case it will become necessary. Why do you think they would be knocking your door now and not wait. Because nothing of that could be true. They are under pressure to make their target just like anyone else in sales and if they can make this deal now, better than wait until the uncertainty has clarified and nothing will happen. If you would switch now due to such remarks, you would face all the difficulties involved in it and later nothing will change and if you wait you hear that everything will change for you, you can still decide to switch. I would recommend to simply wait and see what will happen. These decisions are made at a senior management level and although someone in that position right now might favor option A, he might change job in 3 months and the next decides for option B. You are basically playing roulette, too many variables to predict the outcome. |

In our case Solidworks is the driving force and the company will stick to what SW offers as CFD addon. Nobody is in a hurry (and wants) to switch. Switching to something else would be a bad idea after 12 years of usage because of the experience built and simulation models verified. I was just speculating because Mentor's sell was a big surprise (to me) and wanted to know your feeling about the future of Floefd (SWFS). |
