Unhappy how to draw a contour plot in flowsight?

Hi Dear users;

i've simulated the sediment scour due to horizontal jet, I want to draw the bed profile contours over time in 2D&3D view.

whether flowsight is capable to do this? I also know that Tecplot software can do this but unfortunately, I have never worked with it so far.

I would greatly appreciate it if you could help me!

You can do that using FlowSight.

Once you have your results files (flsgrf.*) open it in FlowSight and follow the next steps:

1. Open the results file with FlowSight:

File > Open... (flsgrf.*)
Choose Selected timeline in the Timeline options (Is necessary to have results file with Selected Data, See Output Tab in FLOW-3D GUI)

2. Add Packed Sediment Geometry (In your case is bed component)

Choose the component you want to see (This is the packed sediment component) on the Geometry List panel checkbox.
If you canīt see the Geometry List panel just go to: Window > Toolbars/panels > Geometry List
You can add color as a constant (constant color) or the best option is to add Packed Sediment Net Height Change as a color to the component:
In the Geometry List panel go to: Geometry List > Color by > Packed sediment Net Height Change Selected
Now you can see the whole packed geometry (bed) in 3D varying according to your scour or deposition results
I recommend you to Modify the color scale. Click-right on Color bar > Modify... > Edit Palette > Editor Scale and choose Earth

3. Adding Fluid Surface:

You now can also include the Fluid Isosurface. Just go to Isosurface List panel > Choose Fluid Selected under Surface column
This Isosurface could be colored by Velocities: Isosurface List panel > Color by > Velocity Selected or whatever avaliable variable
I recommend you to add transparency to the Fluid Isosurface in order to see clearly both fluid and bed. click-right on Isosurface > Transparency

4. Creating 2D - clips:

This is good way to visualize, in a 2D plane, any plane that you want in order to plot packed sediment component (bed) in time.
Go to: Create > 2D Clips... Choose between X/Y/Z or Arbitrary planes. In color by > Fluid Fraction Selected
Click on check box Show advanced > Blanking > Variable Fluid Fraction Selected and click on Create button
You need to Hide, previously, the Isosurfaces, Geometry or anything that you have made before or to assign an adequate Transparency in order to see the new 2D Clip just created.

5. Creating 3D - Clips

Is quite similar to 2D clips with its corresponding variables.

Hi Dear experts/users

I've been trying to show the simulated results as shown in the figure below. but unfortunately, I was not successful so far. is flow3d's post processor or flowsight can do this?

I would greatly appreciate it if you kindly give me some feedback on this.

Dear Hamid, I ran a sample simulation to explain how you can set it up the results that you want to show:

FLOW-3Dīs Post-Processor:

You can do it using FLOW-3Dīs post-processor:

1. Analyze > 2-D > Contour type > B/W Contour Lines
2. Analyze > 2-D > Contour type > Number of contour (Set an adequate number)
3. Analyze > 2-D > Data Source > Selected
4. Analyze > 2-D > Limits > Z: (You have to select the adequate Z plane in order to see the right plane)
5. Click on Render

Please see the attached image: "Scour - Contours Setup 2D" and "Scour - B&W Contours".

You can also select Shaded Contours:

1. Analyze > 2-D > Contour type > Color Shaded with Contour Lines

FLOWSIGHT:

You can also use FlowSight to obtain several critical data for this kind of simulations. The following images shows the steps to setup a different ways to obtain data or visualization:

1. You can only show the final geometry after the scour or sedimentation process. There is not variable colored.

2. Net Height Change on the bed surface:

3. You can also show contours lines in FlowSIght, using the Palette Type: Banded, Right Click-on the color bar, then modify and set the adequate values.

4. Interactive Probe to get data information for bed level on that point.

FlowSight - Main Menu Bar: Query > Interactive Probe

5. You can also analize the physical behaviour using Streamlines, in this case is showed a Line as an emisor of those streamlines.

Dear Harold, thanks a lot for your very thorough explanation.

I've another favour to ask you. I want to show the generated scour hole in profile view and plan view (in terms of quantity) to compare them against experimental values. i've attached the simulated results in different views.

would you please advise me how to extract the following results in the form of quantity(value)?

You can use the measure interactive tool in FlowSight:

For a better visualization you can use 2D and 3D clips to see the plane/profile that you want.

Or you can extract data, point by point (as available), using a graph plot:

Go to: Create > Probe... > Line probe

So you can show a graph fo the Net Heigh Change of bed vs. distance (for a determined time). That distance is from the begining of the line vector (black) until the end (head-cone) of the line vector.

I think this last option is the one that you wanted, am I right?

You can add your experimental results on this graph using a csv or txt file, following the text rules which are located in the documentation. Then you can compare it point by point in the same graph.

If you are comparing whit experimental data you have to be sure you set the right parameters for shield number, diameter, density, the right bed transport equation (according with the spectre/range of applicability) etc. You have to obtain all these data from actual/real world!

You can also export a STL file (CAD) with the new (calculated) bed/surface geometry, including scour or depositions; then you can compare it with your experimental results using a CAD software.

yes, you are quite correct, the profile view of the scour hole/deposition can be obtained simply as you mentioned above. but unfortunately, I did not understand how can I extract the plan view of scour hole as a set of point outputs?

Dear Hamid:

You have to follow the next steps:

Go to: Create > Probe... (click-on)

Select case: your results case

Then select the Line probe option in the drop-down list

Choose Select option in the Line probe setup field

Now you can see a black line vector over the geometry, this vector will extract the data point by point along its own definition, in other words: the initial part of the line extract the zero position in the graph and the head of the line will extract the data of the end (distance: x axis).

This line vector should be in horizontal position in order to extract the right data point by point. Please see the image below. Z1=0.3 and Z2=0.3

If you need to modify the direction of the line vector, you can use the Tool:line panel to edit/modify its position. There you can rotate, move, align etc. Please see the image above to see how to access this Tool.

You can select Use Mesh option to extract the data based on the mesh that you set up in FLOW-3D.

So, now you have to select in the Variable Name box the variable that you want to extract its values, in this case is Packed Sediment Net Heigh Change Selected. You will notice a blue circle/dot in the left side of the variable name which indicates that this variable is already selected and ready to plot.

And finally you need to push the New plot button located in the Add to field.

Dear Harold, thanks for your attention & quick response!

I'm sorry if I did not make my intention clear enough. based on what you mentioned in the recent post and before, the probe feature can only be used for bathymetry along the line which we define it. I want to show the perimeter of the generated scour hole as highlighted (red colour) in the attached figure.

lately, i've encountered a strange problem that I wanted to kindly ask you. I've extracted the deposition height value using 2D clips & probe methods, and the results were different from each other as you can see in the attached picture. this made me very confused.


I'd really appreciate it if you could advise me on my probelms.

Dear Hamid:

Please see the post that I made before (5 May - Post #6 and #7), in that post I shared some images showing the plane view contours lines using both FLOW-3D Post-processor and FlowSight, there you can find their value using every plane in Z or using Interactive Probes and Banded Palette in FlowSight.

These are the normal ways to compare the perimeter of the scour-hole (plan view), so you can put this image over your experimental results using a right scale factor.

Other way is to use a CAD software to compare both numerical and experimental results; you can do this generating a STL file (CAD including final bed geometry) from FLOW-3D Post-processor (Please see 5 of May post) or using FlowSight.

I guess that you want to plot the contour lines (perimeter) in a graph (I think the only reason for this is because you have the experimental data in a text file), so other thing you can do is extracting the data points that you need into a text file (please see the image below). In this case you can get every point of the results according the Limits that you set in X,Y, Z and Time.

Regarding the max/min values in FlowSight, you have to be sure you are plotting the same plane (2D Clip) - line vector probe, you have to select the right plane because is a 3D proble and there are a lot of max/min points. (Please see the image below)

Another thing you have to set is the min/max for the current viewpot, you have to set the color bar with the current information, for this right click-on the color bar to open the menu and set the values for the current viewport, in the next image you can see how to open this menu.

I also have an observation about the last image you have shared, I personally don't think this is a good way to visualize the Net Height Change of the bed because you colored the fluid and not the component (bed), and the component is the one that is actually changing, so for me it makes more sense to set color (Net Height Change) to the component not to the fluid. The next image shows what I am saying. Note: The last image (Scour - 2D Clip Data Probe Min Max) was set according your image just to let you know how to set the min/max value, but this is not the best option to visualize like I said before.

I've some questions/doubts regarding what you mentioned in the previous post as follows:

1- I've set the min/max to the current viewport as you pointed out, and the problem was solved.

2- I would like to know your opinion about the best way to extract the Net Height Change of the bed. I think the probe method can be suitable to do this. if I'm wrong, please correct me. I've been searching for finding the most accurate way to extract this parameter for a long time.

3-unfortunately, one of my problems has not been solved yet. I want to extract the perimeter of the generated scour hole in longitudinal and transverse coordinates. To clarify the issue, I've shown what I mean in the attached picture.
