Default Slurry Flow with Free Surface

Hello,

I´m trying to model a slurry flow (water + solid particles) that goes with free surface. This would be a 3 phase modeling (air, water and solid particles).

Is it possible to model the air and water as immiscible fluids and at the same time model the solid particles as a disperse phase contained in the water? What model should I use?

Hi,

Have you tried using the immiscible fluid model in addition to your multiphase model?

Also, I'm guessing if you have gravity ON and
discrete phase interaction with continuous phase ON, your particle must be contained in the water.

Make sure that you have assigned the drag models and surface tensions accurately.

Use VOF+DPM. Don't forget to put values of surface tension and gravity.

Thanks for your reply, but I can not use VOF+DPM model because of the Volume Fraction of the desperse phase restriction. The slurry I´m trying to model has a volume concentration of over 30%, so the DPM is out of the question.

Thanks for your reply. By now, I have found that:

- The Eulerian immiscible fluid model must be used
- Water must be defined as the primary phase in order to be able to carry the descrete granular phase correctly, without further convergence or stability problems.
- The symmetry drag model for the water-air interaction and the gidaspow model for the water-particles interaction have good results. (I have used no drag model for the particles-air interaction).

So far I have not defined any surface tension parameters. Why do you think it is importante to consider them in my problem?

To give you al little bit of context, I´m trying to solve the following:
- free surface slurry flow over a rectangular canal (width of 0.56 m and 2% slope).
- 0.1 m3/s
- Volume concentration of particles in the water: 33.2%

Hi Sebastian,
I am also working with similar kind of project: drilling fluid (Non-Newtonian) and drill cutting (solid) flow in open channel.

I have noticed that surface tension parameter between water-air is not significant compared to wall-water friction. Momentum transfer between water-air is negligible however it is important for VOF model.

I will continue to ignore the efect of surface tension between fluid-air.
