Applying initial velocity to 6DOF body

Hi, I'm trying to apply an initial velocity to a 6DOF body, but cannot determine how to do this. I've written a udf script for the 6DOF body, entering the mass, center of gravity, etc., but am struggling to figure out how to give this body an initial velocity?

For example, say I drop a rigid ball into a lake. If I provide the material information and such and assign the ball to be a 6DOF body, I would expect it to behave as one. How though would I give it the initial velocity, assuming I don't want to simulate the entire drop through the air before impacting the water? :o
