Error writing compressed file during auto save

Hello everyone, I'm having a problem when using the autosave function in Fluent v13. I have it installed on my laptop (Vista), and the calculations run fine, but the program stops and gives me the error when it does auto save saying

Error: error writing compressed file
Error Object: #f

Any suggestions as to why this is happening and what the solution is? I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

DonQuijote September 17, 2012 05:16

Hi. It could be due to the path root name. e.g. if the folder name where your are working has a 'strange' character, like ?,!,",ñ,etc. try to rename your folders. Hope this help

Regards

Marion September 17, 2012 08:40

Hi,

It also happens when your hard drive is full, or if you don't have the correct rights on the folder.

Marion.

stuart23 September 17, 2012 11:16

Also, are you writing to a local disk or server? This has caused me angst in the past.

mzalzala September 18, 2012 10:31

Thanks for the replies. It's not a new file, just a new version of Fluent (upgraded from 12) and I'm on a laptop now with admin account on Vista. Working dir is my flash drive (G:) and so is my saving location. No funny characters in the directory (except underscores). I have tried changing my save location to D:drive, but no difference.

This is what appears in the pop up box
Error writing "| gzip -2cfv > J:\MZ\turbine_closed_files\dp0\FLU-2\Fluent\SYS-3-01205.cas.gz".

I am also facing the same problem. If any one has found solution to this problem then please help...

Did you run Fluent in parallel? In my experience some user created geometry (points, planes, etc.) could cause problem in parallel mode. Try cleaning those geometry and rerun. You should also try to write the file uncompressed to see if it helps to avoid the error.

Sneha William February 19, 2014 00:29

Hi
I am getting the error too...

Error writing "| gzip -2cfv > C:\Users\IITm\Documents\sneha_trial2_files\dp0\FFF \Fluent\FFF.1-24-00600.cas.gz".

i am using 'series' only. And the drive doesn't seem to be full. And no spl characters are involved. the calculations were gng fine... but in half way, I got this error. plz help.

macfly February 19, 2014 08:27

By 'series' you mean serial mode? The error message only has 1 line?

Sneha William February 20, 2014 05:31

Ya ya ... That line followed by
Error Object: #f
But i think i ve got the solution ... Will get back with it once I am sure it works...:)

Sneha William February 24, 2014 00:25

Power options setting in the PC should be changed to overcome this error. Set 'put computer to sleep' as 'never', and then in 'change advanced power settings', click on 'hard disk' and set 'turn off hard disk after' to 'never'. Also ensure that in the 'sleep' option, 'sleep after', 'allow hybrid sleep', and 'hibernate after' are set as 'never' ...

Do you have a problem with saving in general or autosave?
The power settings turns off the hard disk after # minutes so that Fluent cannot write to the disk and hence throws the error during a simulation. If you don't have an autosave problem then the power settings don't make a difference. If you're saving over a network drive then make sure your network doesn't go to sleep.

Check to make sure you have write permissions etc in that directory and that your disk is not full.

And try saving uncompressed files to see if you still have the same issue (usually the problem isn't because of the compression so normally you do have the same problem).

M.Shousha January 15, 2016 08:17

I've encountered the same problem when i tried to calculate. When i tried to close Fluent the same problem faced me..

Error: Error writing compressed file "FFF.1-Setup-Output.cas.gz"
Error Object: #f

I solved the problem by the following procedure;
1. I had to force Fluent to stop (Task manager >Select (Fluent) > End Task)
2. 'Archive'/'Save As' the project from the workbench to other directory and run Fluent from this directory.

nvnkush June 9, 2016 02:50

Error in Fluent15

i got error in writing compress file

as follow

Error: Error writing compressed file "FFF-Setup-Output.cas.gz"

Error: Error writing compressed file
Error Object: #f

Error: Error writing "| gzip -2cf > FFF-Setup-Output.cas.gz".
Error Object: #f

PLZ give me solution

Thankyou :)

Found solution to error writing gzip

Hey guys,

So all of the above solutions did not work for me but I found a fix!!!
I think this could be an issue with people on windows 10 but not sure.
Basically i realized that my gzip.exe was also crashing when I recieved the error, so i went into the fluent folder and found the gzip.exe and did a simple test to see if it would work in cmd. Basically i tried to gzip a text file and found that it crashed!! Yureka! So this told me that the gzip.exe file itself was corrupt or not compatible with windows.

So I went to: http://www.gzip.org/gzip124xN.zip
Got the new gzip.exe and replaced this one with the one installed in my ansys folder at C:\Program Files\ANSYS Inc\v170\fluent\ntbin\win64 and overwrote the gzip.exe.

Now everything works!!!
If this helped you, please consider checking out and subscribing to my youtube channel at:

Thank you Drdalyo, this worked for me:

I have problem "loading" .gz files on Windows 8 and 10, also saving them in .gz format. I replaced both gzip.exe and gunzip.exe files with the new "gzip.exe you provided" and rename one of them back to gunzip.exe [in C:\Program Files\ANSYS Inc\v170\fluent\ntbin\win64]

This was a perfect solution!Thanks! :)

on overwriting the gzip.exe

Hi Drdalyo,

Did you mean overwrite the gzip.exe in the Ansys folder with the gzip.exe you downloaded from http://www.gzip.org/gzip124xN.zip?
Sorry, I got the opposite impression from your explanation and got confused.

LuckyTran August 9, 2018 14:49

Just go to gzip.org which will link you to the gnuzip page

samarth GS April 18, 2020 03:40

Should the entire .zip folder has to be or just the .exe files?
If so cant find any .exe files.

Please help

samarth GS April 19, 2020 02:13

Could anyone post a link for gzip.exe file, All the other folders are in .zip folder. Can't find .exe file.

Thank you

vinerm April 20, 2020 05:05

gzip

Why do you need gzip? It is automatically installed with Fluent and is available at same location as fluent.exe in Windows. Linux has it preinstalled.

samarth GS April 20, 2020 08:39

The preinstalled version is crashing. I need new gzip.exe and gunzip.exe.

vinerm April 20, 2020 08:58

Crashing

What do you mean by crashing? You cannot use these files by standard double clicking approach Windows follows. These can only be used via command or by Ansys tools that are linked to it. You can re-install Ansys to get it back.
