How to get the interfacial area between two phases in a cell

Hi everyone!
I want to get the interfacial area in a cell. I find some articles represent that"Interfacial area could be calculated by the following:Magnitude of Gradient(Alpha) * Volume". However, I don't know how the equation is deduced. Can anyone explain the derivation processor send some articles and books about it to me? My email address: fuzhoudaxu@163.com.
