Don't accept projects where you don't have a clue where to start.

Seriously.

If you are a student, and this is homework, go back to your teacher/professor and tell him/her that you need some extra guidance on this. If you have a good teacher, he/she will respect your honesty.

If this is for work, go to the person that assigned you to this project, your project manager, or the problem owner. He/she thought that you could start this project without explanation, and inform him/her that this was wrong. He/she probably has some idea about which steps are necessary, maybe not with much details, but the bigger picture should be there.

If somebody on my team would come to me with the message that they had no idea how to start the project, I would be happy to know this at the start of the project. Otherwise, I might find out late in the project that a bad approach was chosen.
