Hello,

Right now, I am performing a study of fluid flow past a cylinder in ANSYS FLUENT. In order to perform this study, I had to have had made a mesh using ICEM CFD. Now that I have obtained sensible results using this mesh, I am now going to do a mesh refinement study. The question is, how exactly do I do this using ANSYS? Basically, I know how to refine a mesh but my question is pertaining to the study of these meshes.

I am sorry but I don't understand what your question is. The most difficult part in a mesh refinement study is in my opinion the refinement of the mesh, so if you can do that, I am puzzled where you are stuck.

Or is the problem that you don't really know what a mesh refinement study is?

Default Steps with Fluent - Mesh Refining

I just recently had this problem and resolved it with a nifty command in Fluent. These are the steps I used:
1) In the previous model you are refining, in Fluent, go to file->Interpolate->and save a file that has the values you want to send to the next model
2) Re-mesh your model in ANSYS Mesh (or whatever software you are using) then load it up in Fluent.
3) go back to File-->interpolate-->read ...........load up the file saved in step 1
4) set up your model like you did the previous one and run the simlulation

When you use the interpolated values from the previous model, it will give you a super good initialization on the model. This will cut down your simulation time dramatically since it will converge extremely fast. However, I sometimes have my model diverge suddenly for some odd reason, I am still trying out this system.

Also, MAKE SURE you monitor the values that you are looking for in the system. I found that the shear stresses at my walls don't converge truly in my model until I get a continuity residual of around 1e-6. Your mesh refinement study will be crap if you don't have steady state on the values you are looking for.
