vahid_ir is on a distinguished road
For example consider a sphere in a flow (turbulent),
one solution is to model a 3d model, but to reduce time of calculations of fluent you define periodic boundary conditions to reduce number of mesh elements but it's still 3d and compared with 2d models it takes lots of time,
My question is can you solve flow over a sphere using a 2d model using symmetry boundary condition in gambit or another methods?
Thanks

Fluent supports 2D axisymmetric simulations, which sounds like what you want to do.

You would generate a 2D mesh of the upper half plane and then specify the "line" that runs through y=0 plane as the axis boundary condition.

It's a separate solver (in script you have to launch using 2d/2ddp instead of 3d/3ddp). In GUI you have to check 2D on the launch window.

You might have some trouble generating a 2D mesh that Fluent will accept, but gambit can do it.
