Meshing a wind turbine blade

1 Attachment(s)
Hi guys,

I am trying to validate my numerical method using NREL Phase VI blade in ANSYS FLUENT, but I am having hard times with meshing. I am using the standart meshing component of ANSYS. I just define face sizing, body sizing and infilation, I barely get 0.9 skewness having 12 M of mesh elements.

I tried different sizing and methods, but still I can't increase the mesh quality. I have attached the picture of the fluid domain and other mesh sizing details. Do you have any advice?

My power output results are arround %20 worse than experimental results.

What should be the range of Y+ for k-w SST model?

One more thing, the rotation direction of the Moving Domain inside is +z, that it true right?

Thank you.

Value of Y+ should be equal to 1.

It seems that rotation direction of the Moving Domain is right.

Did you use structure mesh in computational domain?

Thanks for the response.

Nope I used unstructured mesh. Since the blade has a complex geometry, I guess it is almost impossible to use structured mesh.

Do I need to learn to use ICEM CFD or some other meshing software for meshing? It seems very difficult to get a quality mesh with ansys meshing:/

And btw, the wind turbine blade should be stationary wall and not moving wall right? I just have to rotate the moving frame?

Ok,

I use Gambit but I am agree with you about "Since the blade has a complex geometry, I guess it is almost impossible to use structured mesh"

But i had seen a few tutorial about meshing of wind turbine in Gambit. Also Did you study the following links and download them?

Above links are useful. there is a youtube link....

thx for the responses, it helped me.

Strangely, if I use patch independent method (using tetra mesh), skewness and orthogonal quality values get much better, but mesh looks generally awfull.

So, should I still use it?
