hydrodynamic characteristics of NACA hydrofoils

Hi,
I have a question regarding to the cross- flow turbines and about the simulation of a flow around a hydrofoil.
What is the necessity of the hydrodynamic characteristics investigation of a 2D NACA hydrofoil such as the analyses shown in the attached pictures in the designing of the hydro-kinetic turbines, and what are the major findings thus discovered?
