Anisotropic 2D Mesh coarsening

Is there a way to locally coarsen a mesh in only the x-direction for a 2D mesh? Or alternatively refine it in only the y direction? I want to avoid hanging nodes while still maintaining the height of a row of cells so the region adapt feature that I've been trying to work with isn't producing the mesh I would like. I could go back to design modeler and split my surface to do this, but it I would prefer not to.
