Hi everyone,

I am currently trying to conduct short circuit simulations with Ansys Fluent.
I am using the MSMD Battery Module with a p2D submodel.

To test my setup and verify that I can run high currents I try discharge simulations with high C-rates (>9C).
As a matter of fact I can run my setup in the Standalone mode and recieve reasonable results. As soon as I try moving on to the whole simulation the model fails. Depending on what C-rate more or less time steps are possible.
At some point the simulation crashes, because the potential equations diverge.
If I start with higher C-rates the model might fail in the first time step.

I have been trying a very easy geometry using a fine mesh. Also I checked the problem with the default settings in the p2D.
Result is always the same.

Is anyone experiencing similar problems or trying high current discharge simulations with Fluent MSMD?

Thanks in advance
Lukas

For you simulation, what is physical time, when the error comes out?

best regards

Hey Alexander,

thanks for your reply.
The physical time depends on the C-rate or how I discharge the cell.
If I start with high currents the failure will occur earlier.

The problem is more related to the the cell voltage. When I drop to low values -no matter what time - simuation crashes.

For what is more I tried various physical time step sizes. Even decreasing to 0.1s did not help.

Best
Lukas

Hi Lukas,

Here is the list of things that i would suggest you to do.

1.Could you try checking the Minimum potential value that you have given as input.?
2. checj whether you are discharging or charging the cell.
3. check initial SOC of the cell.
4. initialise at start with very low currents and then gradually increase to higher C's.

Hope it helps you.

May I ask where to find the MSMD Battery Module. I am starting to build a battery cell model. Thank you guys.

I did not find this module in the "Analysis Systems". Does it mean my ansys does not have this module? What should I do to obtain this module? Thank you.
