Particle diameter dependent filter

Hi:) New to Ansys/CFD here.

Is it possible to simulate a filter that separates particles depending on their diameter in Fluent?

My task is to design a microfluidic channel that can separate different types of particles that exists in a fluid using fluid dynamics.

My team's design consists of a simple device that uses filtration to separate White Blood Cells (14um) from Red Blood Cells (7um). When Blood is inserted from the inlet, which is at the left, a sheath flow would be inserted from the upper side, making the cells be pushed against the filtering region. The gap between the filters is 10um, so, while RBCs pass, WBCs should not, at least theoretically.

However, whenever I try the simulation using DPM, both types of particles pass through the filter regardless of diameter. My TA told me it's because the program detects the particles as part of the fluid, which I guess it makes sense.

My question is, is there any way to make this work? Or is it just impossible with Ansys? I've tried looking up online and read/watched some tutorials but have not been able to get a concrete answer. I just want to know if it's at least possible before researching further into it.

Thanks in advance for any kind of answer you can provide.

Dear pablo.

Have you managed to find the answers to your questions? I am new to CFD as well. I am interested in modeling a water filtering through a porous medium using fluent and seeing how the particles present in the water are stuck in the filter. I will be very grateful if you could share your experience.

Regards :)
