Fluent crashes no matter what so geometry

Hello folks,

I am using Ansys 19.2 student version. I am trying to simulate a problem having dynamic motion of a floating plate. I am getting good result but after sometime, it crashes and closes fluent without saving any data.
I am using workbench.

I have AMD Ryzen 7 2700 processor, if it has to do with system.

I have worked for a company and had solved same problem in licensed version but with Inlet Xeon processor and worked flawless.

Does it has to do with licensed/student version or with the processor?
I have tried with different geometries but crashes everynow and then with student version AMD processor.

Kindly help as I have to submit result to the university.

Thanks in advance

I would use the task manager to open the resource monitor and check your CPU usage that way, possibly fluent is limiting itself due to CPU overload? Start with this and try to proceed from there.

Ok. I tried using all the cores, it is an 8 core machine so put 16 value to use virtual core as well. Then another was tried putting 12 value and then tried using serial processor and it showed same result.

don't use hyperthreading for fluent
so if you have 8cores -> use only 8

best regards

why is it crashing in serial processing then?
also how to turn off hyperthreading?

Do you have a file with an error log in the same directory as the simulation?

i found three files in the folder where i was working. let me know if this helps. not sure which one you needed.
Thanks everyone for your help. I appriciate it. I am really stuck here and dont know what to do.

may be you don't have enough RAM at home, decrease mesh elements number.
are you sure, all settings are the same in good case (from your work) and home case?

best regards

Is 16 gb not enough? Also not everything is similar. I've used half the mesh size. All I remember was my work computer was having 16 gb ram with 4 core xeon processor.
Mine is 8 core 16 gb processor. Any idea how to stop using thread processing? I use 16 threads to solve. I want to use 8 core instead as suggested.
Thanks everyone for your inputs.

please find attached transcript if this can be of any help.

I started simulation again and then stopped to start recording transcript and so it has started from the middle.

to use 8 cores just start fluent with 8 cores option, nothing else.

most likely problem comes from some settings, not hardware issue.
you have ~150K nodes which is relatively low, you may check the limit of finite elements for student version on ansys website (just to clarify)

best regards

I think the limit is 512K

jmex September 2, 2019 01:41

Yes my geometry has nodes and elements less than the limit. I noticed that if i stop and resume the simulation, it works for some time. Is there a bug in fluent? I can share the geometry as well. Kindly help with the problem. I've tried with different geometry for same kind of simulation but doesn't work. It keeps closing fluent after sometime without any error.

Can you try installing ANSYS Fluent on another computer and test it there please. Maybe there is a problem with this installation.

jmex September 2, 2019 04:06

Okay. I'll try, as such I don't have any other computer but I can try with different version of ansys.
