swirl

I am trying to run a model which includes both swirl and a porous media. I was running using the standard k-epsilon model but according to the fluent manuals RNG or the reynolds stress model would be more suited to flow with swirl. The Reynolds stress model does not allow me to make my porous zone laminar, why is this? should the swirl factor for the RNG model be averaged over the whole model or a value taken for the region where there is significant swirl?
