Fluent 5.5 can't solve Multiphase+Multicomponent?
 

I want to know Fluent 5.5 can solve Multiphase+Multicomponent model, or not? Because I have Fluent 4.5 and Fluent 5.5. Now, I know Fluent 6 can solve my model. If Fluent 5.5 can't solve, I'll order Fluent 6.

Hi! I don't think that Fluent5.5 can solve your problem. Did you read the restrictions of the different models? With Fluent6 you have more possibilities. But perhaps for your case it's enough, so read the restrictions and decide then:) Yvonne

For my case is simulation of Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell. In this case must to solve include both Muliphase + Mulicomponent by have reaction in gas phase and product water in liquid phase. 2H2 + O2 ----> 2H2O And water will be evaporated to vapor and mix with gas phase then out of process. I want to see profile of water in liquid phase in process

I just to know Fluent 6.0 can solve my problem, or not?

Ok, I have no experience with the reaction-models and evaporation so can't help there. But if I were you and had to decide, whether I order a new program or even a program from another company, I would ask directly Fluent or CFX. It#s quite a lot of money to invest so it should be possible to get a meaningful answer from them!I would be interested what they say. Yvonne

I think your screwed. You can't run the energy equation with multiphase flows in Fluent 6, and I don't think it can do mass transfer yet. Get CFX-5.5 instead. They don't have chemical reactions within a phase yet, but I've heard that it will have it by they end of May.

Yeah, Fluent 4.5 is still probably your best option here - but you have to write interphase mass transfer and chemical reactions in Fortran!

Basically these are painful problems in Fluent...

I've written a multiphase - multicomponent model that sits on top of Fluent 6 single phase model and can do interphase heat and mass transfer and arbitrary chemical reactions. It however, doesn't handle gas-liquid systems, but can handle gas-solid and (potentially) liquid-solid systems with some restrictions. This is a major set of udf code.

While writing this was a major pain, by coding yourself you can get the solver to pretty much do what you want, rather than constantly struggle with other people's assumptions (and restrictions) of what you need!

Yes, writing a lot of user source code can be very painful, but sometimes you have to do it. One thing I like about CFX-5 over Fluent is that you have to do this much less. It's fairly easy to implement many models simply using their expression language and additional variables. No need to write, compile, debug or maintain user source code. Most of it is GUI setup as well which is nice. I also like that they used perl instead of a proprietary scripting language.

Have you looked at STAR-CD? There is a paper presented on one of their web pages www.adapco-online.com, which presents similar work on PEM fuel cells. It appears to address alot of the problems people are struggling with.
