Hanging nodes are created during grid adaption in FLUENT. You can't create hanging nodes in GAMBIT.

Hanging nodes: when you need to refine an area of a mesh due to lack of detail in your solution (BL maybe), for each face within selected region, a node is imposed in the centre, thus dividing the cell face into four. This node is known as a "hanging node". It is a method of selective refining, and is usually applied to cells of certain gradient (y+ for example).

I have a different understanding of what a hanging node is.

before refinement (two cells)

*-----------*-----------*
: : :
: : :

: : : *-----------*-----------*

after refinement (5 cells)

*-----------*-----*-----*
: : : :
: : : :
: a-----b-----*
: : : :
: : : : *-----------*-----*-----*

In my understanding, a is a hanging node, and b isn't.

Laika, still orbiting
