Velocity gradient

This question is related to the wall friction velocity U* in the log law function. It is well know that the function is sensitive to variations in y+, therefore it is also sensitive to the velocity gradient. This leads on to my Question

"How do most commercial codes obtain/calculate the velocity gradient at the wall?"

Or is at simple as calculating the velocity difference over the height of the cell du/dy?
