Hi. I got some problems with an imported STEP-file (ProE) which contains to connected volumes. When imported in Gambit I'm not able to mesh it properly, since some edges and faces of the two volumes coincide and I am not able to unite those entities. Could anyone help me out in this?

If you can, do ALL of your geometry work in ProE... For example, if you're working on an external flow, create your Control volume in ProE... assemble the components in an assembly, and then cut the parts from the control volume. This way you have a single volume. Sometimes you can get better results by tightening the tolerances in ProE before saving the step file. If you can save the step as a single volume, you will save yourself from many problems.

If this isn't possible (like if someone else is giving you the step), then sometimes it helps to heal the geometry before merging it. Use the geometry simplification option, and try a couple different values (10^-3 or 10^-4 seems to work), and trying to unite the volumes just after healing... if it doesn't work UNDO the healing before trying to heal it again.

I highly recommend creating a single volume in ProE if you can.

Hope this helps, and goodluck, Jason

Also, the new version of Gambit (Gambit 2.2.3 I think) handles geometry much better than the older versions.

Hi Jason

First of all thanks a lot for your response. Unfortunately i have to models to solids of different materials and therefore impossible to unite. I also tried the heal function, which didn't work. Maybe I should variate the tolerance. Thanks anyway

What if you went back to ProE, backed up the model and deleted the material properties from the backup? Then you should be able to merge the solids.
