Time to split the Fluent forum?
 

The volume in this forum has increased dramatically over the last year - it now gets 40 new posts a day and messages only stay for max 2 weeks before they are moved to the archives.

What you you think, is it time to start thinking about splitting this forum into, for example, a gambit, a fluent and a UDF forum? Or do you like the action on the single Fluent forum as it is now?

I am for splitting the forum into smaller ones which can be easily readible.

i do have a suggestion, we can try to introduce one more section, say 'tip and tricks', here if someone feels that he wish to put one tip he can put, slowly that portion will have so much of posts (assumign it goes well) that it might cut down on repeatative posts. for example:

how to allow v2f model,

how to set up background of gambit,

what should one take care while using EDC model,

otherwise for discussion the forum is always open.

Good suggestion. However, I think that instead of using a forum for that it would be better to have a wiki. I have been experimenting with wikis for some time and we will probably try to open one publicly within a few months.

Seems like most people agree on that it would be a good idea to split the Fluent forum soon. It will not happen tomorrow though, for the moment we're busy moving to a new server and getting a new site layout finished. As soon as we're up and running on the new server I will start work on splitting the Fluent forum though.

Do you all agree that the following forums would be appropriate:

o Fluent (for everything that is not Gambit or UDF related)

o Gambit

o UDF

o Tips & Tricks (not as a forum but as a free-for-all wiki)

Any suggestions on other ways to split the Fluent forum?

I don't want to split the forum into too many parts - it is essential that all forums keep a certain volume. Low-volume forums have a tendency to quickly die otherwise.

Sounds like a great idea Jonas...good to see such an active forum from both sides of questions and answers!

One comment is that I would not make too many categories at first and have some way maybe to cross link between them. For beginners in particular it may not be clear where to post. So someone looking for a specific modeling capability may not know at first that it needs a UDF. A very experienced user, however will spot right away that the functionality may not be out of the box in fluent and that it needs a UDF.

Geometry and meshing (note I would include tgird too!;-))split fairly nicely from the fluent solver.

You might want to add some sections down the road for the advanced users which is application area related say: combustion and radiation, myltiphase, mdm and rotating domains, etc???

I am for splitting the forum into smaller ones which can be easily readible. with internal linlk from one to the other also i suggest 1-to construct ftp to exchange the udf from experience to beginners. 2- data base for any researcher have the ability to give aids as online chataing about fluent with different langauge, i may be the first one ready to teach any beginner all i know about this great software for mechanical power enginneres. regards, Eng.khairy-Egypt

I would vote not to split the Fluent forum, but see that would make me the only one. Forty, or so, posts a day only take a few minutes to scan through to find anything relevant.

People not familiar with the forum, but wanting an answer to a question, may just post at the first place they see so UDF questions will go in Fluent (main) etc.

I think you need some critical mass - if there are only a few posts a day, and many of them not interesting, I doubt I would bother to look at the split forums on a daily (work day that is) basis.

Judging by the recent posts, it seems there are a lot of questions from students on getting their assignments up and going. Perhaps, this is a seasonal thing and traffic will revert to normal in a few months.

If you do split this forum, it will still provide good info. A few tricks that I have learned from this site have saved me days of CFD aggrevation and set-up, despite asking Fluent support the same questions. Keep up the good work!
