conjugate heat transfer

i am trying to analyze a heat sink of my computer processor. i modelled it in gambit then add a fluid volume. over it. but do i have to connect these two volumes before meshing so i can get heat transfered from solid sink body to the air. wht should i do in this case.

thanks in advance.

Re: conjugate heat transfer

i guess u cannot get to mesh seperately once u have combine both of the volume. i propose u to try firstly build a domain of fluid volume, and then create the heatsink volume inside the volume. Using gambit split volume feature, u shld be able to split the heatsink off the fluid volume. (u shld choose to retain the heatsink volume). As a results, u shld be able to get a interacting domain of fluid volume to the heatsink. hope this is made understood and helpful to you.

hi when i make the volume in fluid volume and split it with the heat sink volume(which is made in the fluid volume) there will be 2 heat sink volumes. shld i not use the subtract and retain the heat sink volume. or i have to do the split volume.(in slipt volme i dont think i shld retain the volume used fr splitting. anyway as soon i tried i will give the feed back. Thanks...

refering to your case. i think i made something unclear. to made the interface of both of the volume interacting, u shld still follow the splitting (and retain) process that i recommend. but, after that, u shld erase the previous volume of the heatsink solid. and then, u define both of the voulme (heatsink and fluid) seperately (as fluid and heatsink material respectively) to make the according modeling. hope this time will help.

Re: conjugate heat transfer

hi Wayne

man i tried the splitting procedure. it gone well but when i tried to import mesh in Fluent. it start making objections like (if i correctly remeber), two different materials at similar node strings, or something like tht. and it splits my model into more regions than only 2 in the heat sink case. i am stuck here...

hi massod, do u mean that u cant get to import the mesh? which version of gambit are u using? did u define both of the region (hs and fluid) respectively?

regards, wayne

Re: conjugate heat transfer

hi i am using gambit 1.3. i defined heat sink as solid and above space as fluid. in gambit it defined correctly but during import to FLUENT caused errors. i exported as gambit neutral file.

Re: conjugate heat transfer

i dunno what exactly cause the error, as I've never tried out gambit version 1.3. But according to the procedures u mentioned, it shld work fine. btw, u shld have meshed the model and define the according boundary conditions respectively (i.e. the air inlet, outlet, continuum of fluid and solid), din u? cant u choose to export it in .msh format?... as i usually get it exported that way... hope could help.
