Defining and assigning a variable to a cell

Hi, I am just trying to adept some region on the basis of iso-values. So I am trying to define some variable related to each cell of that region(which I am interested to adept). Once I define that variable I can assign some arbitrary values to that variable and adept that region on the basis of that variable(iso-values). Does anyone know how to define that variable for a cell and assign a value to it? Thanks a lot, Robi
