Fluent case file........
 

Hello every one,

I was wondering if any one can help me with a little problem I am having here.

I have a 2D fluent case file and it contains a customised 2D geometry of an airfoil. I wanted to model the thing in 3D however, I dont have the IGES file for it, all I have is the .cas file and I can see the profile there.

Is there any way I can get the outline of the profile inform of a sketch inside a CAD package by any means? I know we can print out the image of the profile and cross our fingers while we sketch it from scratch, however I am not confident if I can get it sketched the way it is!

Please help and thanks a lot in advance.

Try the export function with ASCII, select the boundary of your airfoil as surface and choose x-coordinate, and y-coordinate from "functions to write". Select the "node loaction" checkbox and write the whole stuff into a file. You probably wont get this imported into your cad but at least you have a coords file to start with.

You can read *.cas files into Gambit (File->Import->Mesh, change the type to Fluent 5/6, and make sure that you pick the 2D dimension). Then you can delete anything you don't need and either model it in 3D here, or export it as an iges file.

The downfall to working from a mesh is that your surface resolution will only be to the length of your mesh size. So if the mesh on your airfoil is relatively coarse, you will never be able to get a more refined model. All you can do from there is to estimate it using a spline through the node locations (in whatever CAD package you pull the node locations into).
