Hi erdem!

Try this: in 3DSMax, select File -> Export [your current file] and export as IGES (*.igs)

Then in Gambit you will be able to import this file (Import -> IGES).

Hope this helps!

I haven't tried it myself, but I guess that most of the models from 3DMax are polygons, which cannot be exported as IGES. But you can export your geometry as STL which can be imported into GAMBIT via Import / Mesh / STL. Please enlighten us with your experiences. kind regards Michael Bo

You are right, every poligon sets a surface and it will be translated to IGES as a surface. No volumes nor agrupation of surfaces will be recognized.

I allways use a combination of 2 programs: 3DS to "draw" and Rhinoceros to the translations: I save in 3DS as .max file, then I open it in Rhinoceros and save it as IGES version 143. The import to Gambit of that IGES 143 is perfect in my experience.

You can download the demo version of Rhinoceros (limited to 25 saves) in its homepage.

Regards, Freeman

I do have RHino installed, but I am not able to open 3DMax files into Rhino. They have extension *.max which is not supported by Rhino. What du you do to import the file? Kind regards - Michael

Excuse me, you're right. You have to Export your file in 3DS Max as .3ds (File->Export->.3ds); then you'll be able to open it in Rhino with this format.

Regards, Freeman.

So if I don't have access to MAX and only have a .max file of a geometry, I am not able to import into it Rhino, and FLUENT?

Yes, you need to convert that .max to .3ds with the export option in 3DStudio. And then, convert the .3ds to .igs in Rhino simply saving the file with the option "save as".

When you refer to Fluent I understand you wanted to say Gambit, don't you? If so, with the .igs you can directly import this file. I don't know another way, unless you have Pro/E, CATIA V4 or other CAD that Gambit lets you to import directly. As far as I know, Fluent can only open .msh files.

Hope that helps!

Freeman.
